As I held my Mother’s hand, I could see a big smile on her face as she knew how happy I was at that moment. I remember feeling like such a grown up as we were ushered to our seats. I really love winter holidays. At this time, everything around seems fabulous and magical. I spent these holidays at home with my family. 46. Favorite winter holiday memory: Mother Moss’ house in the backwoods of NC on Christmas Eve. Had to access an access road to get there which was ditch-filled red clay. The number of cars in the yard, said that most of her church was at her house and they were all my relatives. I was 4 years old, and between taking a bite from my filled plate, I was inundated with kisses from people I didn’t know, had never met. All of the men smelled like sweet Old Spice, and all the women shawled in fox collars, like Noxema. So many voices filling the room confused my ability to figure out what was being talked about, but the sound, the ringing laughter was clear. Joy.

It was Christmas time and the weather turned on us where we could not get home to Texas to see family. It snowed a lot. The snow turned into ice. Our electricity went out, too. It was so cold in the house. A good friend of mine had a farm not to far from us. They invited us to stay with them until our electricity came back. They did not have power either, but they did have an old wood burning stove that heated the farm house. It was the nicest time because we were grateful for a warm place to go and friends that took care of us. I’ll never for that time.

  78. Donnie Springfield

My favorite winter holiday memory is the sound of tissue paper tearing. When I was a child, the gifts that appeared overnight were wrapped in tissue paper, and my sister and I were allowed to rip those open and enjoy them. The gifts wrapped in fancier paper were for us to open together as a family– after my parents got out of bed. As an adult, I have revisited those fond memories by wrapping my daughter’s gifts from Santa in tissue paper. Hearing her tear into those tissue wrapped treasures brings back my own feelings of Christmas morning delight.

Ripping off the paper and seeing what each one had was like a joy I can never relive as an adult. I wish I can go back to being a kid and do it all over and maybe cherish it a little better and take more pictures, like my mom wanted me to do, and just enjoy the moment more than I did. I wish I knew what I know now so that I could have really done more to have more memories to look back on today.

While visiting family it snowed several inches. She wanted to play in he snow so I put her coat, hat and gloves on and she went out. I called her several times to come in, but she was being her typical hard-headed self. She finally came and she was so excited. This was new to her. She was telling me all about it…then…he little hands started warming up! Oh, she was miserable and in pain. Even tho she hurt, the joy I got from watching her and playing with her in this unusual treat is one of my favorite memories of her childhood.

We continue to use the tree that my (future) wife and I bought back in 1985, and the kids decorate that tree (one of about 10 in the house) the way “Mom” would want it decorated.

We had spent a extra 3 days in the ER due to the blizzard. We were finally able to leave and we drove 5mph and it took 45 minutes to get home when it should have took only 15. We got home safely and blessed. will NEVER forget that week ever.
