January Reading

As the new year begins, you might wish to consider my newest book, The Strange Case of Guaritori Diolco, the first book in the World Unbalanced series, which is available for $2.99.

Coming out of a coma after twenty years, Guaritori–Garth to his friends–discovers that the world he knew no longer exists.

Advanced technology has failed. Magic, which he didn’t know even existed, has become much more powerful. Supernatural groups battle for supremacy, forcing human beings to seek shelter wherever they can find it.
Garth’s only hope for survival lies with a varied group including a shape-shifter, an alchemist, a tarot card reader, a blacksmith with a flaming sword, and others. But a prophecy foretells that he will bring about the downfall of their leader, the mysterious Ms. M.

Even worse, Garth doesn’t know who he really is. When he and Ms. M find out, it looks as if the prophecy is true. The only way for Garth to stay alive is to disprove that prediction. But to do that, he’ll need to fight faerie royalty, vampires, ancient gods–and his own worst impulses.

At the bottom of this column, you can find a preview of the book.

Work in progress on the second book in the series, including completed chapters, is available on Substack.

  1. My New Years Resolution is to be out of the foot boot & find out what is wrong with my foot and to be more kind to those who are in need

  2. I do not make resolutions. I prefer to keep some things in mind that I would like changed or to happen, and just take things day by day, this way I do not get anxious, or nervous that I have not kept up with the promises I made to myself.

  3. My resolution the past few years is to not make a New Year resolution. Therefore, I cannot break it on Jan 1st.

  7. I don’t make New Years Resolutions, but I’m hoping to spend as much time outdoors enjoying beautiful mother nature as possible!

  8. I don’t usually make any resolutions, but as I get older (thankfully) I need to concentrate more on my health and watching my diet.

My New Years goals are to not buy anything except necessities. I have created spending envelopes for thrift an hobbies of $100 each for the year. I want to save as much as possible to retire early. Other than that I want to embrace life’s blessings and enjoy all the magic moments

  12. my new year’s resolution is to try and eat healthier and be more active but we will see how long that lasts.

  13. Stepping into the new year with fresh goals and positive vibes! My focus this year is on leveling up my creative skills—whether it’s digital drawing, photography, or mastering new tools like Clip Studio Paint. Here’s to growth, learning, and smashing those resolutions. Let’s make 2025 amazing!

My New Years Resolution is to stick to my monthly budget and goals schedule. Having things on a bit of a schedule and within budget really helps to complete things instead of too many things going on at once and never getting things completed.

  15. I don’t typically make new years resolutions. Hoping for more clarity & healing in 2025. Happy new year everyone!

  16. This year, I’m focusing on strengthening my connections, spending more quality time with loved ones and reconnecting with old friends. Here’s to meaningful relationships in 2025!

  17. My New Years Resolution is to get out of my comfort zone and travel more, whether that be in my state or around the U.S. I want to see the beautiful sights and landmarks of our nation.

  18. My New Year’s resolution for 2025 is to learn a new skill that will boost my career. Excited for the journey ahead!

  19. my New Year’s resolution is the most stereotypical one possible that i’ll probably not commit to: losing weight.

  20. This year, I did not really make any resolutions, as much as requests for myself. I need to learn to start putting my needs ahead of others this year (and for now on, really), I need to work on my stress and anxiety, and I need to focus on my health more than I have been (exercise and giving myself time to relax)

  21. My new year’s resolution is to spend more time with my family. Also, to make time for myself and not just work myself to death.

  22. I do not make New Year’s resolutions. Important changes should not come just because of a date change. And there is plenty of research that people do not stick to these resolutions.

  23. New year resolution sounds cliché to me. I’d rather be spontaneously diligent, and let the year unravel itself, that way I am not disappointed or feel unfulfilled.

  24. Carole Harris Harris

I have to buckle down on paperwork now! and declutter my house put laundry away. can you get me an assistant?

  25. This year I am going to make a Bingo Card instead of a resolution. I will have on the card fun things I want to do and cross them off one by one.

  26. My resolution is to keep promises to myself. I also show up for others, but put myself on the back burner. I’ve been doing great! Today I was able to log work out #22 in 24 days and that felt great.

  27. Katherine Kistner

My New Year’s resolution is to rescue as many animals as I can afford to. Thanks so much for the opportunity and your books look very interesting! I am going to check Amazon for them. Thanks for the opportunity and Happy New Year!

  28. I worked A LOT last year!! Which is fine, but with all that work comes being away from home. I missed out on soooo much family time, wanting to provide a good life for my family. My New Year’s resolution is to not take that overtime being offered at work. My New Year’s resolution is to use some of that built up vacation time. My New Year’s resolution is to spend more time with my family this year!!

  29. My resolution is to make the moments count and spend time with loved ones. These past few months have been rough and we are not going to hold back on things we want to do this year.

  30. I don’t do New Years resolutions, but I’ll share my great grandfather’s “winter colds’ tincture”: Boil one cup molasses with a tea cup full (approx.1/3 cup) strong vinegar until syrup forms firm ball in cold water, add 1tablespoon whiskey, gin or other hard liquor , stir well, remove pot from heat, mix in 1 finely minced small onion ( raw). Pour onto greased plate.
The victim ( or invalid) is required to consume ALL of it before retiring to bed.

  31. I spent 2024 staying grounded. In 2025 I want to keep grounded but travel, explore what’s around me and stay active & mindful!

  32. At my advanced age, the only resolution I ever make is to not waste a moment of whatever time I have left. Live every month, every week, every day as though it may be my last, because some day, it will be.

  33. My new years resolution is to eat more healthily and to the gym more regularly I’ve been slacking! Happy New Year everyone and good luck!

  34. Happy New Year! I tend not to make resolutions, per se since I seem to break them easier that way. Instead, I try to make smaller goals that I’d like to achieve over the year. I intend to read more this year. I intend to clean out a couple of my closets. I intend eat to keep my blood sugars in check, and to take walks 3 or more days each week.

    1. If you’re talking about my books, yes, they’re all fantasy.
If you’re talking about the books in the Bookfunnel promos, in New Books for a New Year, I see Wait for Me, the Alpha Plague, Defending Earth, Intersection, Dark Nebula Conntact, The Worth of a World (judging by covers and titles), among others. Find Your Next Read seems to have at least a couple as well.

  35. Hi, Happy New Year!!! Thanks for sharing these books, I’ll have to check them out.

And thanks for this giveaway. I hope there will be more giveaways this year.

Let’s make it a great year!!! Happy 2025!!! Let’s go!!!

  36. Happy New Year! I have celebrated way too many new years, and made so many resolutions that I’ve never kept, that I know better not to even try anymore 😉

  37. So far this new year has not been favorable. Looking forward to better opportunities and success this year. Working is self growth.
